LEXINGTON, MA - Bierbrier Development of Lexington announced that it has received another Green Initiative Award from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Senate, Massachusetts House of Representatives and Newton Needham Regional Chamber for its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified development project at the Needham Street Village Shops located at 55 Needham Street in Newton.

The Green Initiative Award described by the Newton Needham Regional Chamber “considers waste prevention, recycling, purchases, energy and water conservation, stakeholder involvement, transportation and social capital in the decision-making process and inspires others to embrace best practices and reduce carbon footprint.” These buildings are a leading example of sustainable design, consuming less water and energy, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“We are delighted to receive our second Green Initiative Award for the Needham St. Village Shops and be recognized for sustainability and environmental conscious design in retail development,” said Len Bierbrier, President of Bierbrier Development. “As developers and thought leaders, there’s a responsibility to develop real estate with minimal environmental impact and to create a balance between economy and society.

Bierbrier Development pioneered the LEED application in the shopping center industry when it influenced the development of regulations for core and shell LEED awards, resulting in Arlington Village Shops receiving the second Silver Award nationally in June 2011. Arlington Village Shops is one of the first core and shell LEED-certified buildings in Massachusetts.

Using low impact materials, energy efficiency and emotionally durable design is integral to achieving sustainable design standards and mitigating environmental impact. This is meaningful innovation that bridges environmental and social differences.
